The Beaverton Library’s Murray Scholls branch is welcoming area bookworms to attend the 10th anniversary of its expansion.

From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, April 11, at the Murray Scholls branch, located at 11200 S.W. Murray Scholls Place, Suite 102, the library will celebrate a decade of increased community service.

“We’ll have some welcoming remarks, then our storytime hosts at the branch have designed a special 10th anniversary storytime for kids and families, all themed around the number 10,” Dawn Borgardt, public services manager for the Beaverton Library, said.

Borgardt said there will be festivities throughout the day, including snacks and a slide show commemorating library milestones over the past decade.

A ‘community need’

The Murray Scholls branch opened in 2010 at the Murray Scholls Shopping Center.

“That was really in response to community need, folks in that neighborhood wanting to have a convenient place to pick up library books,” she said. “That first iteration of the Murray Scholls Library had about 6,000 square feet … just a smaller footprint.”

In 2015, with support from the Reser Family Foundation and the Beaverton City Library Foundation, the library nearly doubled in size to 11,000 square feet.

“That expansion is the dedicated children’s area,” Borgardt said. “With that expansion, we’ve been able to now offer storytimes almost every day of the week. We have hundreds of people who come in for those storytimes every single week.”
